Consorzio Turistico Tre Cime Dolomiti
The forest we are in lies on the slopes of Monte Aiarnola (2,456 m above sea level) and is characterized by the presence of Norway spruce (Picea abies), a conifer favored by humans for the technological properties of its wood and its rapid growth, and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), a pioneer species—that is, one capable of establishing itself and growing even on nutrient-poor and rocky soils.
The Scots pine is easily recognizable by the orange color of its bark and its long, pointed needles that grow in pairs. In the Norway spruce, on the other hand, the needles are shorter, pointed, grow singly, and are arranged in a spiral pattern around the twig.
