It is often difficult to do circular hikes on Madeira because the levadas only open a path in one direction. However, on this route, the increased number of levadas provides an opportunity to combine them into a circular hike. You ascend on different elevation lines to 4 different levadas, namely the Veredas Acesso PR6/6.1, the Levada das 25 fontes, the Levada do Risco, and the Levada da Rocha Vermelha A. The tour is also exciting because of the two long tunnels, which could not be more different. The nice café at Rabacal invites you to take a break. Those who wish can extend the tour via the Levada do Risco.

The 25 springs hike is classically done through the Reitertunnel of the Vereda Acesso PR 6/6.1 because there are virtually no elevation differences to overcome, and the spectacular Reitertunnel connects the different landscape images of the eucalyptus forest and the mountain forest. The popularity of the destination at the 25 springs speaks for itself. A mystical place that connects the elements of water and earth. Instead of taking the same way back as going forth, this circular tour cleverly varies with the levadas located at different elevations and also allows an extension of the circular tour. The Levada do Risco above leads to a nice snack bar/café at Rabacal, a popular viewpoint that can also be reached from the Fanal plateau. Much further down in the valley is the Levada da Rocha Vermelha A, which, after a few descent meters, shows surprising seclusion. Through a narrower and longer tunnel, you reach the other side of the mountain with a view of the sea. Some effort in hot weather is required for the ascent meters back to the starting point (approx. 150 hm), but this perfectly rounds off this tour on different paths.

Safety information
Tall people over 1.90 m might have problems in the low long tunnel on the Levada da Rocha Vermelha A.
The specified elevation meters cannot be accurately represented because the software does not correctly capture the position of the tunnels (almost flat with a slight slope/grade of 1-2%). Therefore, the depicted mountains actually disappear. Real elevation meters are estimated at about 200 hm in ascent and descent.

Roadbook
We start on a wide forest road through a eucalyptus forest and reach after a few minutes a stone watchman's hut just before the entrance to the Reitertunnel, recognizable by the large water pipe. After about 20 minutes in complete darkness and well-cooled, one reaches the wooded and impressive mountain landscape, where the 25 springs are also located. Easily, we follow the Levada das 25 fontes to the destination, which is a real tourist magnet and probably rarely found in solitude. After a small hiking loop, we initially return the same way as before, but halfway back, we turn left. After some steps, we ascend to the Levada do Risco above, which almost leads directly to the café at Rabacal. It is worth resting on the café's balcony with a wonderful view of the hilly landscape or also in the terrace area on the wooden tables and benches. Well strengthened, we descend directly from the terrace again to the Levada das 25 fontes and then take an enchanted and steep path down to the left a few meters later. After a few descent meters, we reach the Vereda Acesso PR 6/6.1. This path, located far below the Levada das 25 fontes, is rather rarely visited and then leads through an even longer tunnel than the Reitertunnel through the mountain. After about 30 minutes, you reach the end of the tunnel and only have to ascend after a hairpin turn to the watchman's hut and the eucalyptus forest, which leads us directly back to the starting point, the parking lot at the road.

Large parking lot on the left side of the road, mostly also frequented by shuttle buses (good to check on Google Earth). The path starts on the opposite side of the road and is well signposted.Coordinates
