On our traverse through the Bavarian Pre-Alps, we have now reached the Isarwinkel, pass through the valley town of Lenggries, and head west into the next subrange, which is dominated by the imposing Benediktenwand. The Brauneck area—accessible by cable car—serves as a tourist hotspot here. We begin an exciting ridge hike there, which, as it crosses the Achselköpfe, even presents a significant mountaineering challenge. However, it is possible to bypass this tricky section. At the foot of the “Benewand,” the Tutzinger Hütte nestles in a shady hollow—late in the year, hardly a ray of sunlight reaches this spot, and the Bavarian Foothills appear wilder here than almost anywhere else.
From the Lenggrieser Hütte (1,338 m), we descend westward along the Grasleitensteig (No. 621) into the mountain forest. After a long diagonal stretch, we reach the open terrain at Bichl and hike out to the hamlet of Mühlbach. A short distance to the north is the Hohenburg parking lot, at about 715 m. Continue to the intersection with Karwendelstraße, which leads right into Lenggries, 679 m. In the town center, take Johann-Probst-Straße to Isarstraße and cross the large bridge to the west side of the Isar. From there, follow an ascending side street to the valley station of the Brauneckbahn, at approximately 720 m. We’ll comfortably cover nearly 800 meters of elevation gain by gondola. From the mountain station, at about 1,500 m, we’ll first climb the nearby Brauneck, 1,555 m, and then follow the ridge to the Schrödelstein. Beyond a dip, the trail climbs steeply for a short stretch toward the Stangeneck (1,646 m), featuring the first rocky sections. The protruding Vordere Kirchstein can

Mark Zahel
