In the southern foothills of the Brenta, the Fiume Sarca has carved its deep valley. From Stenico, one reaches this deep gorge via the Valle dei Molini. Here begin the Valli Giudicarie, an extensive valley landscape with gently rising plateaus. The area is dotted with small villages characterized by their rural charm and traditional architecture. Among the scattered settlements, mainly apples, corn, and "La Montagnina del Lomas," a regional variety of potato, are cultivated. Step by step, we reach the first mountains of Lake Garda. Between the steep cliffs of Monte Misone, 1803 m, and Monte Brento, 1545 m, lies the glacier-shaped Val di Lomasone. We hike through this elongated, lush green valley on the wooded west flank of Monte San Pietro, 1067 m, to Rifugio San Pietro. A prime spot with a wonderful view over the entire upper Lake Garda. Hard to believe, our Alpine crossing is almost complete.
