With joyful anticipation, we set out. Today we will reach the Mediterranean, provided we do not split the very long stage into two days. We continue hiking through the Collio wine region and reach Gradisca d’Isonzo, which entices with a beautiful old town and a mighty castle. Then we cross the Isonzo, which in Slovenia was still feminine and called Soča. Through charming karst landscape, we reach the lakes of Doberdò and Pietrarossa. From the Gradina visitor center, we go down to Lago di Doberdò. The lake may have disappeared or only a small swampy puddle may appear. The solution to this puzzle: In the porous karst rock, the water flows underground. It only comes to the surface when the caves and tunnels are filled to the rim, for example after prolonged rainfall. After leaving the nature reserve behind, we continue through the karst for a while. Time and again the sea appears before our eyes. When we finally smell it, it is not far to the small harbor and pebble beach of Duino.
Trail 1A now takes us back in the direction from which we came on the other side of the tracks. After 700 m, there is a right turn to the A4 motorway and we go under it. The first houses of Duino are reached. At a road junction, we turn right. The large road Strada Statale 14 is crossed at a pedestrian crossing. We continue straight ahead, still following the 1A markings, until we stand in front of a gate tower of Duino Castle. Here we take the street to the right, which slopes slightly downwards to the harbor. We leave it at a hairpin bend and descend on a staircase path to the harbor of Duino, at 1 m.After 27 stages, we are overjoyed about the Italian Adriatic. At the harbor of Duino, we can sit down on the pier or in front of one of the two restaurants and look out to sea. Those who want to plunge into the waves can do so free of charge (albeit actually illegally) from the pier or for a fee from the pebble beach. There is also a nice and quieter swimming spot on tomorrow's stage
