15 Greifenburg - Hermagor
Even though we will cover many kilometers today, we can recover a bit from the exertions of the past days. The paths are easy and the ascents and descents are moderate. In the process, we cross the next mountain group: the Gailtal Alps. We do this cleverly via the Almboden Pfarreben, so we do not have to exceed an altitude of 1160 m. Afterwards, we hike down to the green Gitschtal valley along the river Gössering. In the communities of Weißbriach, St. Lorenzen and Jadersdorf, there are recommended accommodations, but in Hermagor, we can spend the night at the Kaiser of Austria.
››Weißenbach Gorge: The gorge in the Gitschtal valley is a little-known, romantically wild tufa limestone gorge. An unexpectedly spectacular path leads over wooden ladders - the longest being 10 m long - and walkways through the deep ravine. The Weißenbach is fed by karst springs whose calcium-rich water bubbles out of the rock and cascades down in small waterfalls. When the water reaches the surface, carbon dioxide escapes or is consumed by organisms. This causes the water to no longer keep the calcium in solution and porous tufa-like rock forms. The varied ravine vegetation is also interesting.‹‹In Greifenburg, 644 m, we return to the Gnoppnitzbach stream, which we follow downstream on the left bank along the so-called toll mile. At the mouth into the Drau River, we keep left. After 1.2 km we reach the Drau Valley Road (B 100). This takes us across the river to Bruggen, 590 m, the endpoint of the alternative stage V 13 coming from the Hugo-Gerbers Hut. At the first opportunity, we
