Half-day route from Schlägl to the official starting point, the 1077 m high Bärenstein. The route follows the locally marked "Bärensteinrunde (No. 41)."

For most hikers, the first half of the day is devoted to the approach to Aigen im Mühlkreis, the start of the path. The rest of the day can be used to visit Bärenstein from Aigen or Schlägl via Panyhaus by the shortest route, then return to Aigen or Schlägl or continue onwards to Peilstein.

The starting point of our Rupertiweg 10 is therefore the Bärenstein in the Mühlviertel, about 6 km north of Aigen im Mühlkreis. After the summit visit, we initially return through the forest to the Panyhaus, from where we go straight ahead through the Hochbuchet forest, then later in switchbacks – passing some wayside shrines on the Falkensteinerweg – down to the access road of the Panyhaus, which we cross. Passing a chapel, we reach the aforementioned road again and follow it downhill about 600 m. At the next road junction, we keep left and reach the main square of Aigen directly. From the Linz main street, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the village Schlägl with its eponymous monastery.

    Author’s recommendation

The short route to the starting point at Bärenstein offers scenic views over the northern national border (Vltava reservoirs!) and thus forms a successful counterpoint to the end of the Rupertiweg at Austria's southern border.
