Since the Raurisertal is not a transit valley, it becomes increasingly pristine and peaceful the further we go up. The valley end of the rear Raurisertal, also called Hüttwinkltal or Valley of Gold, is one of the most beautiful valley ends in the Eastern Alps. Above it tower the partially glacier-covered peaks of the Goldberg Group, especially the three-thousanders Schareck, 3123 m, and Hoher Sonnblick, 3106 m. Between these two, we will hike through tomorrow. Today we enter the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest protected area in the Alpine region, and head up to the Naturfreundehaus Schutzhaus Neubau, unless we have already settled at the end of the valley or at one of the alpine pastures. There is plenty to see and do: rest or picnic with a view of the mountain backdrop, wash for gold, watch vultures and eagles, explore one of the rare alpine raised bogs...
››Kings of the Skies: Golden eagle, griffon vulture, and bearded vulture are the kings of the skies in the Hohe Tauern National Park. They are presented—alongside other natural spectacles—at the National Park House in Wörth, Dorfstr. 27, in the exhibition "In the Facets" (peak season 10am–6pm, otherwise 1pm–5pm, €6 entrance fee). A film informs about the three birds of prey species, their elegant gliding flight, eyesight, hunting, and survival ability in the high mountains. The bearded vulture, with a wingspan up to 2.9 m, is the largest bird of prey in Europe and with 225 to 250 breeding pairs also one of the rarest. In 1986 the Krumltal (see "Variant 1") was chosen for the reintroduction of bearded vultures in the Alps, where they have lived year-round since then. In summer, 60 to 80 griffon vultures as well as golden eagles gather in the "Valley of the Vultures." Besides the Bräualm, the WWF has set up an observation station with telescopes.‹‹We start at the Kirchplatz in Rauris,
