The first part of this stage is among the most beautiful on the entire Rota Vicentina. The ascent from São Teotónio to Vale de Fecho follows a narrow trail through lush scrub and woodland, which is at its most spectacular in the spring. This is followed by a long descent through a tranquil river valley landscape (Vale de Fecho and Vale Carrado). Via Malpensado (189 m), we reach the Vale de Alhos, which we follow all the way to the small village of São Miguel. Along the Seixe River, which forms the border between the Alentejo and the Algarve, the trail then leads to the bustling town of Odeceixe.
With the parish church of São Teotónio behind us, we cross the village square and, at the end, turn left onto Rua Jogo da Bola, which leads into Rua do Calvario. We walk downhill along this street out of the village and continue on a dirt road toward the cemetery. At the start of the large right-hand curve, we turn left onto the well-marked dirt road. The following section leads along a narrow path through a landscape of cork oaks, pastures, and scrubland. In this section of the Rota Vicentina (spanning about 1 km), according to information from the tourist office, there are conflicting interests, and affected landowners refuse to allow trail markers to be placed. For this reason, alternative markers (small stone mounds) have been placed in some spots. Nevertheless, the trail is easy to follow.
