07 Eastern Austrian Border Trail, E13: Mailberg – Ernstbrunn
An extensive forest between Patzmannsdorf and the Oberleiser Berg and the latter itself, including the nature park, are the highlights of this stage.
Mailberg is left in an eastern direction and we walk on a farm road to Großharras. Afterwards, we follow the Patzmannsdorfer Graben to the town of the same name, which we cross in its entirety. After Patzmannsdorf, the large forest takes us in, several crosses line the path, starting with the Jugendkreuz and ending with the somewhat hidden Fischerkreuz. Then we leave the forest and climb up to the Oberleiser Berg.
A lookout tower offers a great panoramic view; remains of a Germanic royal seat can also be seen. The pilgrimage church in the village of Oberleis is also worth a visit. Our path turns south and reaches Ernstbrunn via Steinbach (parallel with the Weinviertelweg 632 and the Weinviertler Jakobsweg).
Author’s recommendation
From the Oberleiser Berg, you can reach the Buschberghütte in about 1¼ hours, the lowest located AV hut in Austria. In addition, near Ernstbrunn is the Wolf Science Center of the VetMedUni Vienna – visit the wolves!
