07 Eastern Austrian Border Trail, E01: Nebelstein – Weitra
From the Nebelstein hut via Maißen, the Holzmühle and Wultschau to Weitra.
The view from Nebelstein (with a new observation tower built in 2019) offers a beautiful start to the long-distance trail in eastern Austria.
On the first stage, we hike through typical Waldviertel landscapes, mostly through extensive forests, but also through small villages.
From the Nebelstein hut (access from St. Martin in about 1:45 hrs), we descend steeply for a short time, then continue along a forest road to the chapel of Maißen. Slightly downhill, we pass the fairytale hotel Nebelstein, cross a small brook and then reach the Holzmühle near the Moorbad Harbach spa facility. We cross a ridge and reach the valley of the Wultschau stream. On the road, we hike into the village of the same name.
We need to use the road for a bit longer, then turn right into the forest and follow a magnificent hike to the idyllic Gabrielental. At its end, we reach the town area of Weitra and climb steeply up to the main square.
Author’s recommendation
Inn and pony farm Holzmühle – good food and many animals, including pot-bellied pig Bruno and two camels, yaks, alpacas, ponies of course and several other domestic animals.
