07 Eastern Austria Borderland Trail, E12: Retz – Mailberg
We switch to the Weinviertel Borderland Trail, which will accompany us to Hainburg. The stages become significantly longer, but there are several possibilities to shorten them.
From Retz, we turn towards Unternalb, which we cross away from the road. We continue along the Seebach, onto the 'Gupferten' and further to Ragelsdorf. Noteworthy here is the solitary bell tower. On a farm road, we go under the B303, climb up to the Hutberg and through a cellar path down to Haugsdorf.
Along the road, we go to Alberndorf and turn south there. We then cross the Locatelli Forest, pass the Grieg Cross, and then hike through a large game enclosure (wooden crossing over the fence) to the Buchberg. The descent leads us after another crossing to Mailberg.
Author’s recommendation
In Haugsdorf, visit the sculptures in the parish church. In Mailberg, the Maltese Castle, the castle chapel, and the Kunigunden Chapel are worth seeing.
