Almost half of the GR 221 is now behind you – time to pause for a moment. Today's stage is quite short, so you have plenty of leisure to explore the Orange Valley of Sóller (pronounced Sojeer) or just to lie lazily on the beach for half a day soaking up the sun and recharging your “battery” for the upcoming long mountain stages. Enjoy along the way the bay of Port de Sóller, which looks like a picture straight out of a holiday catalog, and the mountain range towering behind it, stretching from Puig Major and Puig de Lofra to Cornador Gran and the antenna forest on Serra Alfàbia.
››Extra tipsBotanical Garden: The garden on the main road to Port de Sóller offers perhaps the best insight into the flora of the Balearic Islands on a relatively small area. Here you can discover and identify many species found along the edge of the GR 221 (Carretera Palma – Port de Sóller, km 30.5; March–Oct. Mon–Sat 10 am–6 pm, in winter 10 am–2 pm, jardibotanicdesoller.org, admission €8). Can Prunera: A small but fine museum for modern art, with works from Miró to Toulouse-Lautrec! The city villa built in the Catalan Modernism style alone is worth a visit (Carrer de sa Lluna 86-90, canprunera.com, Tue–Sat 10:30 am–6:30 pm, admission €6).Ice Cream Parlor: The best ice cream on the island is at Sa Fàbrica de Gelats opposite the market hall at Plaça des Mercat (Carrer Cristófol Colom, gelatsoller.com, closed on Sundays). Definitely try the orange ice cream, naturally made with fruits from the Sóller valley.Palma: Why not spend a day in the capital? Very relaxed (but not exactly cheap)
