In the first half of the day, we hike across the karst plateau between Ingolstädter Haus and Riemannhaus. The meaning of the name "Steinernes Meer" becomes clear here: the almost endless rock formations seem like huge waves. The view from the sun terrace in front of the Riemannhaus is equally spectacular. Nearby, the two hut mountains Sommerstein and Breithorn tower; far below, the green Saalfelden basin shines; above it, part of the Salzburg Slate Alps is visible, which we will cross in the next two stages; and on the horizon, we see the partly snow- and glacier-covered peaks of the High Tauern. The descent into the Pinzgau is initially very steep, then pleasantly leads through forest and over meadows toward the destination. Anyone still with energy can visit the parish of Maria Alm. The main nave of the pilgrimage church was built around 1500. The slender church tower, dating from the late Gothic period, is also from that time and is the tallest in the state of Salzburg at 76 m. Inside, a uniform fresco decoration from 1757 and a late Baroque high altar surprise visitors.
Until the midday stop, we follow the Eichstätter Weg marked 401. The Ingolstädter Haus at 2119 m is left towards the south. We pass the junction to Schindlkopf and hike to the Wegscheid Praterstern at 2150 m. Here crosses the transition from Kärlingerhaus to Peter-Wiechenthaler-Hütte (see "variant").We stay on the Eichstätter Weg and climb over the karst plateau parallel to the summit ridge of the Achselhorn to the Äulhöhe. At 2309 m, this is the highest point of our crossing of the Steinernes Meer. After a gentle descent, we reach the Riemannhaus at 2177 m. The alpine club hut has existed since 1885 and lies spectacularly in the Ramseider Scharte between Breithorn, 2504 m, and Sommerstein, 2308 m. The latter is a worthwhile summit goal in good visibility (moderate, half an hour ascent from the hut). ››Almer Pilgrimage: The pilgrimage from Maria Alm in the Austrian Pinzgau across the Steinernes Meer to St. Bartholomä at the Upper Bavarian Königssee is considered the oldest mountain
