Although today’s GR 10 route doesn’t take us over any peaks, the Basque hilly landscape shows itself at its best. The scenic high-altitude trails, which wind their way along the flanks of the numerous hills, lead us from one col to the next. From these vantage points, the view stretches all the way back to our starting point, the Atlantic Ocean. At the end of the stage, we face alpine challenges for the first time. The steep descent through the rocks gets us in the right frame of mind for the High Pyrenees that still lie ahead.
Starting at the tourist information office in Ainhoa (123 m), we follow the Herriko Etxeko Inta trail. At the Chapelle St. Joseph, we keep to the left and arrive at a spring at a T-junction. Here we turn right and climb up a wide, winding gravel path to the Chapelle de l’Aubépine, 386 m, where there is an official bivouac site with a water faucet. In front of the chapel, a wooden bench invites you to take a break and enjoy the beautiful view of Ainhoa and the surrounding hills. To the left of the chapel, on a small hill, there is a depiction of the Crucifixion of Jesus. We pass the three white crosses and shortly thereafter reach a junction. Continuing straight ahead, the trail leads to Erebi, 528 m. The GR 10, on the other hand, turns left and winds around the hill with a gentler incline. At the Col des Trois-Croix, 513 m, the trails meet again. We follow the trail straight ahead, skirting another hill (Atxulegi, 617 m) on its southern flank, and arrive at a saddle with a trail
