The village of Lichtenberg as well as the farms of Lichtenberg belong to the municipality of Prad am Stilfserjoch. The landmark of Lichtenberg is the Lichtenberg castle ruins. In 1993, a board was founded to preserve Lichtenberg castle from decay. Extensive renovations have been advanced in recent years to use the castle for cultural events and thus make it accessible to the public. The Lichtenberger Höfe lie above this castle in the steep and sunny terrain.
Interesting facts:
There are a total of 18 farms scattered on the Lichtenberger mountain. Until 1990, there was a small mountain school there. Up to 30 primary school students attended this school and were taught by only one teacher. There is even a chapel at the Wallnöfhof, where holy masses were held. A small tavern was also found on the Lichtenberger mountain, where people regularly met to celebrate and sing. Today, one looks back with nostalgia on these times, as the mountain school has long been closed due to the declining number of children. Thus, almost only older people work and live on the farms today. The labor-intensive mountain life makes it difficult for young farmers to inspire women for this life. The low yield from agriculture often is not enough to survive. The young farmers are therefore forced to take additional jobs in the surrounding villages. Some farms have already been abandoned, and what will happen in the coming years is uncertain. A somewhat different way of life is still lived here. "We continue as long as we can," the farmers say. They never run out of work anyway; you can't say the people are dissatisfied. They feel comfortable on their mountain because they are used to it and so cultivate their steep fields day in and day out.
