White Achievement winter cycling route 46.5 km, Hossa National Park
White Achievement guides you to experience the beautiful ridge and lake landscapes, old-growth forests, and rugged rock cliffs of Hossa National Park in winter. The winter route reaches all the finest spots of the national park, such as Värikallio, the canyon lake of Julma-Ölkky with its stunning ice walls, Muikkupuro, Ala-Valkeinen, and the scenery of Kokalmus.
The old winter road of Hossa, the Old Leipätie, has been used for centuries in winter for logging camps, hay fetching from meadow plots, and fishing the famous whitefish of Valkeainen. On the route crossing the national park, you can still see capercaillies or wolverines. Fresh tracks and droppings of these are often found along Leipätie.
White Achievement is a long and challenging winter cycling route. There are a few short steeper climbs and descents. The difficulty comes from the long distance.
It is recommended to start the route earlier when heading toward spring, as sunlight softens the surface of the route. An early start on an April morning allows you to see the black grouse mating displays at Joukojärvi.
The route can also be ridden shorter, with alternative starting points at Pistonlehdontie or Lihapyörte.
Author’s recommendation
