... A marked trail (No. 4, green) that’s perfect for exploring the history of coal mining... and gravel biking, starting from the Halte Fulviale and the Guinguette de Laval! After leaving the banks of the Mayenne, you’ll ride through the charming Avesnière neighborhood along its old alleyways until you reach the tunnel that takes you under the boulevard. Head toward the Bois de l’Huisserie along a superb little shaded road… that’s quite steep! This varied route will take you successively along very narrow roads, forest trails, and paths along the edge of meadows, ending on the beautiful Laval-Renazé greenway; After the woods, head toward Montigné-le-Brillant via the “route de la mine,” which will take you (at km 9, on your right in the middle of a field) past the old changing rooms of the coal mines that were used to fuel the lime kilns, which are numerous around Laval; This very narrow road continues as a superb path through the fields (in winter, crampons are recommended); A bucolic setting is guaranteed… watch out for the descent at Bel Air (Km 10.5), which will take you down to the Vicoin River before you follow it along a path that’s sometimes bumpy! Take a 2-minute break at the old Montigné train station (Km 13)! A place called Port-Sec! This station was once used for loading and unloading local coal! It’s no longer recognizable, and the tracks have given way to a beautiful greenway! After passing through a tunnel under the Route de Saint-Nazaire, head toward Saint-Berthevin! The tree-lined greenway makes for an easy and safe ride all the way to Coupeau (Km 17.5). Be careful when crossing the Ahuillé Road and watch out for the many hikers, pedestrians, and horseback riders! In Coupeau, don’t hesitate to park your bike and explore the rugged landscape—one of the most beautiful views in the area can be seen from the heights! This is also where the campground is located, offering the option of a comfortable overnight stay in a chalet… or simply in a lodge! For those who are also trail runners, now’s the time to try the Run & Bike and tackle the 8 km local course… All that’s left is to head back to Laval… via a series of trails and paths that will take you—almost without realizing it—right into downtown! Watch out for the final descent on Rue de l’Ermitage! Now it’s time to enjoy La Guinguette and savor this first gravel riding experience!
