The Ober-Olm Forest Route
When the Mainz electorate ended in 1792, the forest area still covered 6,000 hectares and stretched from Ober-Olm to Ingelheim. In 1816, the Grand Duke of Hesse took over the forest. In 1945, the 427-hectare area was assigned to Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1951, large parts of the forest served the US armed forces as a training ground with munitions depot, and in 1957 a missile site was built. Today, the forest is mainly dedicated to athletes, cyclists, hikers, and nature lovers. The forest area is managed by the Ober-Olm Forestry Office.
