Favorite route of the Aktivhotel Alpendorf - old Roman road - Werfenweng, very idyllic through the forest
Discover the beautiful old Roman road to Werfenweng. Gravel bike route with a slight ascent, paved little road with little to no traffic, idyllic in the forest. Conclusion: one of our favorite routes
You start directly with us at the Aktivhotel Alpendorf (your bikes are well stored in the new bike cellar) www.hotel-alpendorf.at. Then go down through St. Johann and then along the Alpe-Adria trail (or Tauern bike path) heading towards Bischofshofen. After the Bischofshofen leisure park, you go up the "old Roman road" to Werfenweng. There you have a beautiful view of the Tennengebirge. The return is downhill to Pfarrwerfen, where you then ride again on the Alpe-Adria trail back to St. Johann.
Author’s recommendation
At the market square in Werfenweng there are some cafes / bistros for a stop. Otherwise, you can continue to Wengerau. There you will find a nice alpine hut.

Attention at the railway crossing in Pfarrwerfen - drive slowly, as the curve is almost not manageable
Roadbook
The start is directly at Aktivhotel Alpendorf. First ride towards St. Johann and stay in the Untermarkt. At the Brückenwirt, turn right onto the Alpe-Adria trail or Tauern bike path towards Bischofshofen. After Bischofshofen, you have to pass right through the underpass at the sewage treatment plant. Attention, this is easy to overlook. Just remember: after the Bischofshofen leisure park, the route continues idyllically for 1-2 kilometers; when you then go under the street (small bridge), an asphalt road appears. There you must go right through the underpass. Then always follow the yellow signs to Werfenweng. Once in the town center, you have earned a break.
The return goes via the state road to Pfarrwerfen. At the railway crossing, turn left back onto the Alpe-Adria trail (Tauern bike path) heading towards St. Johann. TIP: You can also continue on the road if you want to avoid gravel paths.
Have fun!
