Between the Alpine city of Chur and Ilanz lies 35 kilometers and 500 meters of elevation – if you choose the direct route. On this gravel bike tour, you will collect plenty of additional kilometers and elevation meters thanks to a worthwhile extra loop into the Safiental valley.

You start rolling in Chur (593 m above sea level) and ride along the Rhine on the bike path to Reichenau, where the Vorderrhein and the Hinterrhein flow together. On side roads, you continue along bike route number 3 to Bonaduz (662 m above sea level). Here, you reach the spectacular road through the Ruinaulta. The Rhine Gorge, with its 300-meter high rock walls and rock formations, is also called the "Swiss Grand Canyon." Take a short break to enjoy one of the most diverse landscapes in the Alps. Over the bridge at the end of the first short descent, you reach a brief climb with beautiful hairpin turns leading to Versam (909 m above sea level). Just at the village entrance, you turn towards Safiental and follow mountain bike route number 157 "Calörtsch." Via Arezen, you travel on natural roads through forests and meadows to the alpine pastures at Calörtsch (1401 m above sea level). Here, you get a particularly impressive panoramic view of the Flimserstein. Following the MTB route, you reach a short forest trail through the Calörtsch forest (1580 m above sea level) again onto a road that takes you to the idyllic village of Brün (1287 m above sea level). On the fast descent from Brün, you return to bike route 3, which you follow towards Valendas (809 m above sea level). Valendas enchants not only with countless well-preserved manor houses but also with the largest wooden fountain in Europe. From here, you continue following the bike route to Ilanz (699 m above sea level), the first town on the Rhine. From Ilanz, you comfortably return to the starting point Chur by the Rhaetian Railway.
