Along about 40 kilometers following the Appel stream, the cycle route leads us through unspoiled nature, past old mills, castle ruins, noteworthy churches, vineyards, through forests, meadows, and fields.

The cycle path accompanies "the Appel" along its entire route in the steadily widening valley. Except for 6 km between Tiefenthal and Neu-Bamberg, it runs on its own paths and connects the Donnersberg region with the Nahe valley. Originating at the western edge of the Donnersberg between Falkenstein and Marienthal, the Appelbach flows 40 km through the Palatinate and Rheinhessen before it flows into the Nahe at Planig.

    Safety information

Our cycling routes often run over paths shared with others. We therefore ask for considerate and friendly behavior at all times. Winegrowers, farmers, and foresters use the farm roads through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work (also on weekends) and always have priority. These paths can also be temporarily more soiled due to work operations and/or weather conditions. Special caution is also required when cycling on the (mostly quiet and less trafficked) streets in and around the Palatinate villages.

ATTENTION from July 2025 – closure of the section Gerbach – St. Alban

A section of the Appeltal cycle route is completely closed in the St. Alban area. The detour is from the Gerbach primary school via the L400 to St. Alban and vice versa.

    Roadbook

We start either in Marienthal at the Blockhütte or in Ruppertsecken. The cycle path leads through the forest to Wölzweiler. After a short section on the country road, the cycle path runs between fields and the Appelbach to Gerbach. Via St. Alban, Gaugrehweiler, and Oberhausen, the cyclist reaches Münsterappel and from there via Niederhausen and Tiefenthal to Neu-Bamberg, the gateway to the Rheinhessen Switzerland. From there, a detour to Hof Iben is worthwhile. The next station is Wöllstein – from there we can continue to Bad Kreuznach or Gensingen and connect to the Nahe cycle path. From Ruppertsecken or Marienthal to Wöllstein, the cycle path is uniformly signposted according to the current guideline.

Dining options in Niederhausen and Tiefenthal.
