The Latvavaara route starts from the heart of the Paljakka ski resort and offers a wonderful yet demanding experience in the surroundings of Paljakka’s forests. The route offers something for everyone, as the track through Paljakka’s wind-blown snow forests suits both skiers who appreciate the scenery and also offers challenges for the most experienced ski enthusiasts.

The route starts from the parking lot of the Paljakka ski resort, where the first three kilometers are easy but filled with scenic terrain. After three kilometers, the track begins to ascend gently upwards and eventually reaches the top of Latvavaara at about 338 meters. From the hill, it descends a long distance back towards the village. The hill is steep and demanding in parts. The final stretch is flat back to the ski resort.

Along the route are three good resting places: Pirunkirkko day cabin, Ilveskota, and Löytöjärvi day cabin. All locations have facilities for making a fire. The resting places and Paljakka’s fine scenery make the route a good destination for a day ski trip.

    Author’s recommendation

At the top of Paljakka, you can detour from the track to admire the views from the top of the Paljakka slope.

A suitable destination for families with children is the Pirunkirkko day cabin, 3.8 km from the start, return the same way.

    Roadbook

The Latvavaara route is marked in the terrain with orange paint marks.

The route starts from the Paljakka ski resort heading north as a lit track. After about 1.2 kilometers at the intersection of the tracks, continue straight ahead, i.e., leave the lit track that curves to the left. NOTE! The intersection of the tracks may be unclear. After the intersection, cross a small road. About 3.8 kilometers from the start, you will reach the first resting place, the Pirunkirkko day cabin.

After a couple of skiing kilometers from the day cabin, cross the road again. At about 5 kilometers, you reach the border of Paljakka Nature Park. However, the route does not go into the nature park area but passes alongside it. The route rises gently for the next 3.5 kilometers, after which you arrive at Ilveskota. NOTE! Just before arriving at Ilveskota, there is a rather steep right-curving, slippery downhill slope on the track. Ilveskota is about 30 meters from the actual track, but a track has also been made to its yard.

After Ilveskota, continue on a very gentle downhill, almost flat, to the intersection leading to the Löytöjärvi day cabin. There is a spur trail to the day cabin about 350 meters from the main track.

From the Löytöjärvi day cabin, the track climbs very gently for a couple of kilometers towards the highest points of Latvavaara. On the top of the hill, the track continues for a couple of kilometers and arrives close to the upper station of the ski slopes. Here you can detour to admire the views opening to the west by following a small path from the track to the top of the slopes.

From the upper part of the ski resort, the track turns towards the village of Latva, where the route descends gently. From the edge of the field in Latva village begins a challenging, long, and at times very fast descent towards Latvajärvi and the Louhenjoki River. In the river valley, continue towards the ski resort and the end point of the route. The final section is relatively flat.
