The Westwall was a roughly 630 km long military defense system built after 1936 along the western border of the German Reich from Basel to Kleve. It consisted of over 18,000 bunkers, tunnels, as well as countless ditches and tank barriers. In the Palatinate, the defense line ran from Zweibrücken via Oberotterbach, Steinfeld, Schaidt, Büchelberg to the Rhine at Hagenbach. A special focus of the border fortification was the so-called Otterbach section – between Oberotterbach and Schaidt in the Bienwald – where around 650 small bunker facilities were built.
The starting point of the tour is at the train station in Schaidt. The route initially leads on the Schaidt Westwall hiking trail (narrow path between B-fortress and Schaidt tank ditch!!) past the Schaidt tank ditch and the remains of the former B-fortress "Kiefernwald" to the Turk graves. From there, it continues on the Steinfeld Westwall hiking trail to the Steinfeld tank ditch and the tank obstacles between Steinfeld and Kapsweyer. Via the mixed vegetable bike path and the Fassboden tour 1 bike path, you then reach Bad Bergzabern to the Westwall Museum. Via Kapellen-Drusweiler and past the Otterbach line at Niederotterbach, the tour returns to the starting point in Schaidt.

The starting point of the bike route is at the train station in Schaidt. From the station, follow the marking "white or red circle," which leads you along Vollmersweilerer Straße and through Ringgasse to the edge of the forest. From here, turn right onto the Westwall hiking trail along the forest edge heading west, passing the remains of a Westwall bunker complex, a tank ditch, and the remains of the former B-fortress "Kiefernwald" (narrow path between B-fortress and Schaidt tank ditch!!) up to the Turk graves.
At the Turk graves, turn right and now follow the blue trail marking of the Steinfeld Westwall hiking trail through the forest to Kakteenland, where you turn left to the Steinfeld outdoor swimming pool. From the pool, continue on an asphalt road until shortly before the sports field. Here, turn left and thus reach the Steinfeld tank ditch. From here, the route continues on the Steinfeld Westwall hiking trail to the tank obstacles in Steinfeld.
From there, follow the bike path signs to Kapsweyher. In Kapsweyer, turn right into Bahnhofstraße and in the town center left into Hauptstraße. On the mixed vegetable bike path, you reach Schweighofen.
200 m after the town entrance, at the Gartenstraße junction, you meet the bike path "Fassboden-Tour 1." On this well-marked bike path, continue via Haftelhof, Heidenbrunnenhof, and Heyhof to Bad Bergzabern.
From Ludwigsplatz in Bad Bergzabern, follow the bike path "Fassboden-Tour 2." It leads you through the town center. After the castle, turn left following the bike path signs towards Siebeldingen/Pleisweiler. Via the streets "Herzog-Wolfgang-Straße," "Trillerstraße," "Maxburgring," and "Madenburgstraße," you reach the Westwall Museum on Kurfürstenstraße.
After a possible visit, continue on Kurfürstenstraße to the shopping center. Turn right here and at the next intersection (roundabout), go straight ahead to B 427 (McDonald's).
Turn left and continue on the bike and footpath to Kapellen. Shortly after entering Kapellen, turn right into Weinbergstraße. Through the vineyards, you reach Deutschhof.
Shortly before Deutschhof, drive 50 m to the left and then turn right onto the field path, which leads you to a hill. At the ridge top, turn right and after 500 m reach L 545.
Follow it about 200 m south to the recess where you turn onto the second asphalted path. It leads down to the Otterbach valley. Turn left onto the lightly used K 25 to Niederotterbach, where you can visit the tank ditch and tank obstacles before the town entrance, and from there continue on K 25 to Vollmersweiler. At the exit of Vollmersweiler, turn right and after 1000 m reach the train station in Schaidt, the starting point of the tour.
