Western Brick Route

Western Mecklenburg invites you on a 380-kilometer journey back in time. Already in Schwerin, the castle and the cathedral with its cathedral courtyard impress, the latter still fully preserved from the Middle Ages. At 117.5 meters, the red giant is one of the tallest churches in Germany.

The route leads northwest out of the state capital, where a fascinating landscape stretches out. Past crystal-clear lakes, lush meadows, and fields, it continues through dreamy towns with stately rural and urban parish churches toward the sea.

Cycling holidaymakers experience a varied path along the beaches and cliffs of the Mecklenburg Bay and through the dreamy hilly landscape of the Klützer Winkel. Before the huge cathedral of the Hanseatic city of Wismar, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, amazes cyclists, the two castles Kalkhorst and Bothmer enchant with brick splendor and garden art.

The route leads along the Wismar Bay and the Salzhaff to the Baltic Sea spa Kühlungsborn. Here, the Bastorf Lighthouse peeks out between beautifully blooming rapeseed fields. The sea is very close and invites swimming. Whistling and puffing, the narrow-gauge railway “Molli” accompanies cyclists for part of their journey. Heiligendamm, also known as the “White Town by the Sea,” shines along the way in princely splendor. In the shade of ancient beeches, the path leads along steep shores to Warnemünde. Up the Warnow River, the cyclists are welcomed by the three monumental brick churches of the Hanseatic city of Rostock.

Inland, the path continues through landscapes shaped by the Ice Age with small villages, past the Doberan Minster, the crowning achievement of North German Brick Gothic. Charming deciduous forests stretch on the final stretch right up to the western shore of Lake Schwerin.
