Weisenheim am Sand is a local municipality in the Vorderpfalz lowlands in the district of Bad Dürkheim. In this place, which belongs to the collective municipality of Freinsheim, a variety of sand hare sculptures can be found. The hares symbolically represent the nickname of the inhabitants of Weisenheim, who are called “sand hares” by the surrounding municipalities. Since the town is surrounded by loose, fertile sandy soil, it is obvious that hares felt very comfortable in this environment.
Additionally, there are three less well-marked sand hare trails around Weisenheim am Sand.
The two sand hare trails 1 and 2 are easy circular hiking routes in the north of the town through the vineyards. They can be well combined. The sand hare trail 3 in the south is somewhat more demanding and also leads through vineyards and through the Ludwigshain chestnut forest.
