Water shapes the region much more strongly than the name “Emsland” suggests.  On this route, you will discover – besides the Ems – also some of the numerous lakes, streams and canals.

First, you cycle along the Hase out of Haselünne. At the open-air and local history museum, an ensemble of six half-timbered houses, you discover historical technology: a collection of old household and agricultural tools.

The Hase, its oxbows and tributaries such as the Teglinger Bach together with drainage canals of the moorlands shape the landscape on the way towards Meppen. At the Meppen lock, you cross the Dortmund-Ems Canal and shortly after the village of Schwefingen you reach the Drinking Water Experience Trail. Topics such as drinking water treatment, groundwater protection and the natural water cycle are presented here clearly and playfully.

On the left bank of the Ems, you cycle to Geeste and to the Geeste storage basin. Originally a technical structure, the body of water has long since developed into a meeting point for many water sports enthusiasts. In addition, a species-rich biotope with numerous birds and amphibians has emerged in a protected area.

Initially again over the canal, it goes back to Haselünne. Stops are worthwhile on the way at the Bawinkel Heritage House, at the Clusorth-Bramhar windmill and to enjoy a special view of the landscape beauty – not least in the Haselünne Cow Meadow nature reserve.

In Meppen you will find the "Museums at the Koppelschleuse". Here you can explore the prehistoric and early history of the Emsland and the history of the city of Meppen.
