On this route, the river with the most water in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows its many faces: sometimes rushing like a mountain stream through rocky gorges, sometimes calm through blooming meadows and floodplain forests. An adventure, not only for cyclists.

    Author’s recommendation

In the old watermill in Schwaan, one of the oldest buildings in the city, there is now an art museum. The museum honors the former Schwaan artist colony.

    Warnow Valley Circular Route

    Roadbook

From the beginning, the Warnow shows its versatility. In the Rostock city harbor, shortly before its mouth, even large sailing ships can anchor. A few kilometers further, the Warnow meanders peacefully through meadows and forests. The cycling route sometimes follows the river along dense reed belts, then again leads through idyllic villages with quaint churches and charming manor houses.

In the wild and primeval breakthrough valley of the Warnow, the river turns into a roaring stream, rushing loudly over boulders and fallen trees. The Slavic temple site Groß Raden promises further adventures. The town of Sternberg welcomes its guests with pretty half-timbered houses and the magnificent town church.

One lake after another invites you to swim and relax in the Sternberg Lake Nature Park. On the way to Crivitz, a white castle towers in the middle of a beautiful park. A few kilometers later, the Pinnower See and shortly after that the Schweriner See sparkle in the sun. From the eastern shore of the lake, there is a magnificent view of the Schwerin cityscape. A detour to the state capital with its splendid residence castle is worthwhile. Returning to Sternberg, cyclists are accompanied by rushing deciduous forests, flower-covered meadows, and quiet ponds.

The last stage follows the Warnow to the former Benedictine nunnery in Rühn and through the winding old town alleys of Bützow to Schwaan, where an artist colony was founded in the 19th century. The Hanseatic city of Rostock is almost in sight again.
