Vennbahn cycle route and Eurovelo 5 - on excellent cycle routes through Wallonia
Through the Ardennes to the Meuse: On the Vennbahn cycle route and the EuroVelo 5, cyclists can discover the diverse nature and culture of Wallonia away from motorized traffic.
The Vennbahn is one of Europe's longest rail trail cycle routes at 125 kilometers. It runs from Aachen through a varied low mountain range landscape along the German-Belgian border through Eastern Belgium to Troisvierges in Luxembourg. From Aachen, the route steadily climbs slightly but almost never exceeds a 2% grade. Those who prefer to roll almost entirely downhill should start in Troisvierges (about 2.45 hours by train from Cologne). The route is car-free, excellently signposted, and offers cyclists more than just the finest asphalt under their tires: sights and bike-friendly accommodations nearby are marked, and information boards provide interesting facts about flora and fauna as well as the history of the old railway line. The EuroVelo 5 (Via Romea Francigena) runs about 3,200 kilometers from England to Rome or from London to Brindisi on the southern Adriatic coast (3,900 kilometers). It crosses Belgium for nearly 400 kilometers – from Geraardsbergen in Flanders via
