Pure variety on the sunny island
The sunny island of Usedom fascinates especially because of its charming contrasts. While fashionable Baltic Sea resorts line up like white pearls along the 42 km long sandy beach, the hinterland captivates with mysterious forests and quaint fishing villages. A varied holiday pleasure is promised by the contrast of beach and sea, nature and idyll.
Author’s recommendation
Beloved summer retreat: Already 100 years ago, wealthy city dwellers from the capital traveled to Usedom. This earned the island the nickname "Bathtub of the Berliners." Today, more and more holidaymakers are discovering the elegant Baltic Sea resorts and the dreamy inland by bike.

Starting in front of the “bathtub of the Berliners,” as Usedom is also called, the circular route begins in Wolgast. From here, you ride over an impressive bascule bridge across the Peenestrom to the sunny island. Beside the quiet banks of the waterway, you soon enter the mixed forest. Trees line the fine sandy beach like a green ribbon extending all the way across the Polish border to Świnoujście. On Usedom, one Baltic Sea resort follows the next. Its best-known representatives include Zinnowitz, Bansin, Heringsdorf, and Ahlbeck. Their promenades are adorned with fashionable villas and snow-white guesthouses. Over the long piers of the resorts, you can stroll as in the golden age. A good contrast is offered by the hinterland. Between the Baltic Sea and Achterwasser, you pass quaint fishing villages and reed-covered salt huts. You can enjoy a wonderful view over the island from the Streckelsberg near Koserow.
To preserve this fantastic nature, the entire island was rightfully declared a nature park. Wooded hills, small lakes, mysterious moors, and blooming rapeseed fields shape the varied landscape of the unspoiled hinterland. Those seeking peace will find it in the Lieper Winkel. On this peninsula, there are more birds than people. Artistically decorated house doors delight visitors in the old agricultural town of Usedom. And culturally, the sunny island has a lot to offer too. In summer, music festivals and the Vineta performances take place here.
At the Zecheriner bascule bridge, you must reluctantly leave the island. At the spot where the Peene flows into the Szczecin Lagoon, you might feel transported back to childhood. You ride past cows dozing in the sun and storks strutting across the meadows. Frogs croak in dense reed belts, and ducks quack in a contest. A highlight of the flatland is the church tower of Lassan.
