On the route between Roth and Brombachsee, you will experience – literally – that the Franconian Lake District has much more to offer than "just" its lakes: historic villages, storied castle complexes, varied, untouched nature, and typical Franconian inns accompany you on your journey through the lake district.

Repeatedly, leisure opportunities – such as a trip with Europe’s largest trimaran – and sights – such as the Hilpoltstein castle ruin – invite you to dismount and discover the region more intensively.

    Roadbook

First, the cycle path leads from the ROTHSEE via HILPOLTSTEIN and along the route of the former GREDLBAHN to HEIDECK-SEIBOLDSMÜHLE. Here we follow the FRANCONIAN WATER CYCLE ROUTE westward and finally reach LIEBENSTADT via HEIDECK. At the edge of the town, we turn left onto the lightly trafficked, gently ascending road to Mannholz. Shortly before the town begins, we turn right onto a path that leads 400 m past MANNHOLZ to the left towards the Sandsee castle SANDSEE. The path to this privately owned castle passes through a magical forest with magnificent avenues.

From here, the route descends steeply. At the bottom, turn right onto a municipal road and immediately after the bridge over the federal road B2, a paved path leads us left to PREXELSMÜHLE. There we cross the street and continue straight over HOHENWEILER and ALLMANNSDORF to BROMBACHSEE. Athletic cyclists can do a round around the lake.

Those who now prefer a snack are recommended to ride their bike over the dam (main barrier) to the ferry pier PLEINFELD. From here, you take the MS BROMBACHSEE to ALLMANNSDORF and can have your lunch on the ship or at the kiosks by the lake.

For the return journey to the ROTHSEE, we use the well-signposted FRANCONIAN WATER CYCLE ROUTE again via RÖTTENBACH and ALTENHEIDECK. The magnificent view of NÜRNBERG makes a visit to the second 'castle' of our route in ALTENHEIDECK highly recommended. Information boards inform about the history of the ruin. In Altenheideck, we leave the FRANCONIAN WATER CYCLE ROUTE. The path leads towards Ostern via TAUTENWIND and LAFFENAU to FUCHSMÜHLE. An open enclosure and a cozy beer garden invite you to linger.

Finally, we ride back to HILPOLTSTEIN, where the last castle of the day awaits us. Those who find the climb after the tour too strenuous can learn more about the history of the town and castle HILPOLTSTEIN at the craft museum SCHWARZES ROSS at the marketplace. From there, it is just a stone's throw back to the starting point at the ROTHSEE.
