The route leads over well-developed cycle paths and little-used secondary roads from Weiden i.d.OPf. via Vohenstrauß, Eslarn, Oberviechtach and Schwarzenfeld to Schwandorf. The route can easily be traveled in the opposite direction as well.
Although designed as a day route, it can easily be done as a two-day route (with an overnight stay in Waidhaus or Eslarn). This also leaves time for a detour to the state border at Tillyschanz or to visit the Doktor-Eisenbarth Museum in Oberviechtach.
Between Schwandorf and Weiden i.d.OPf., both Deutsche Bahn AG and the private Oberpfalzbahn and the also private ALEX run. All trains offer the possibility to transport bicycles.
Author’s recommendation
If possible, ride the route on a weekday, as there is less traffic on the Bockl cycle route and on the Wölsendorf - Schönsee cycle path. Also, there is usually more space for bikes on the trains to and from Weiden i.d.OPf. then.
The signage in Weiden i.d.OPf. is — to put it mildly — not up to date. Some of the green arrows that show the direction between the labeled signposts are missing. It’s best to print out a detailed map section for Weiden i.d.OPf.
