We begin our cycling route at Röthenbach station in Oberhäuser and follow the cycle path sign with the number 5 and the stylized locomotive northwards. First, we cycle along the tracks before a left bend brings us onto the cycle path along the state road, which runs on the former railway line up to Lindenberg.
In Lindenberg (alternative starting point) we cycle through beautifully designed parks and see the mighty twin towers of the St. Peter and Paul church ahead of us. Passing close to the Waldsee, we continue towards Scheidegg (alternative starting point). We pass the bus station on the left and choose the left fork at the junction, which takes us to the spa house and then to Unterstein. On the small lanes, we let our gaze wander over the green hilly landscape toward the mountain range.
Climbs and descents alternate repeatedly and we finally reach Scheffau. Here we can take the first break and refresh ourselves at the inn. Then it goes downhill through Neuhaus and past the old customs office, which marks the border to Austria. Having arrived in the Alpine republic (the route is not marked here yet), we turn left towards Thal. Next is Eyenbach and we cross the border again. At the exit of Eyenbach, the signpost points us to Weiler and Dressen.
Shortly afterwards, we turn right and cycle through shady forest. It is now not far to Weiler, another starting option for this cycling route. After visiting the pretty marketplace, numerous inns with local beer invite us to stop for a drink before the signposting leads us to the northern exit of the town. We are now on the former Weiler-Röthenbach railway line, which passes the outdoor swimming pool. We leave Weiler through an industrial area and are again on the former railway line.
Through forest and over meadows, we steadily approach Oberhäuser with a slight ascent. A decommissioned railway carriage of the Westallgäu railway enthusiasts welcomes us to Röthenbach/Allgäu station in Oberhäuser, where we finish our route.
