The varied circular route connects the two waterways Main-Danube Canal and the historic Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal via romantic field and forest paths.
Two large waterways run through the district of Roth: the Main-Danube Canal and its predecessor from 1843, the Ludwig-Main-Danube Canal, shaping the landscape between Wendelstein and Schwanstetten. But the route offers much more than "just" cycling along idyllic watercourses: art and cinema, old crafts and regional products, Franconian villages and idyllic forest areas, Germany's highest lock, and an interactive online museum as well as numerous refreshment opportunities make the varied circular route a special experience!

If you want to stock up for the route with bread, sausages, cheese, and fruit from the region, you can do so at the Dorfladen Schwanstetten (Ringstraße 22 in the Leerstetten district, www.dorfladen-schwanstetten.de ).
Cyclists traveling with smartphones can get information at every step about buildings, people, and facilities in and around Schwanstetten: The Schwanstetten Local History Association operates an interactive local history museum that exists only online: www.museum-schwanstetten.de .
The Leerstetten lock has the highest lock drop height in Germany at 24.67 meters. So it’s worth waiting for a lock operation during a short break!
In the small village of Furth, you will find hands-on craft history: Around 1900, six families worked as charcoal burners in the village. The charcoal was sold, among others, to Schwabach for gold beaters and the Leonine wire drawing industry. Since 1995, the charcoal burning has been in the hands of one family. The three visible kiln sites on the left bank of the Hembach, between the Hembach bridges, testify to a long tradition in the Reichswald. Visitors learn interesting and curious facts about life in the village and charcoal burning directly at the charcoal burner house located right on the hiking trail. By the way, charcoal produced at the charcoal burning site can be purchased through the Association of Further Charcoal Burner Friends: www.further-koehlerfreunde.de .
In the middle of Rednitzhembach, the art trail with over 50 artworks attracts visitors! Information at the municipality of Rednitzhembach (www.rednitzhembach.de). And: A special insider tip is the municipal cinema museum Rednitzhembach: Unique in the region, this museum of a special kind offers a cinema atmosphere in the style of the 1950s with 28 nostalgic cinema seats. During a guided tour, visitors can admire 35mm film projectors from 1938, which have been elaborately restored and equipped with a Cinemascope lens. Guided tours are only bookable for groups at the municipality of Rednitzhembach, 09122 692-123, www.rednitzhembach.de .

Roadbook
Via NÜRNBERGER STRASSE and the straight continuing ALTE STRASSE we reach the right-turning LOHWEG, which then leads into a well-ridable field path up to FURTH. The small hamlet is especially known for its charcoal burning.
The field path turning left in FURTH continues after passing through RAUBERSRIED to the state road NÜRNBERG–ALLERSBERG. Alternatively, you can also go via SPERBERSLOHE (beer garden) to RÖTHENBACH/ST. WOLFGANG. Via the road-accompanying bike path, we quickly reach the village - and thus the towpath of the historic LUDWIG-DONAU-MAIN KANAL (opened in 1843).
The waterway is today an important architectural monument and invites you to hike and cycle with its very well-preserved towpaths. A popular excursion destination is the beer garden at the BRUCKKANAL, which is easily accessible from RÖTHENBACH/ST. WOLFGANG. With this impressive structure, the canal bridges over the SCHWARZACH, which flows in a deep, walkable gorge.
The return path also leads on the romantic towpaths via WENDELSTEIN and changes at a junction to the REICHSWALD-BROMBACHSEE-RADWANDERWEG. This path, with its continuous signposting, takes us via LEERSTETTEN and HARM to the modern MAIN-DONAU-KANAL, inaugurated in 1992, where the route then turns left onto the ROTHSEE-ALTMÜHLTAL-RADWANDERWEG.
At the SCHLEUSE LEERSTETTEN (Leerstetten lock), visitors get a good impression of how much water engineering has changed compared to the LUDWIG-DONAU-MAIN KANAL. Attention is now required at the turnoff to SCHWAND. For this, we must leave the bike path along the MAIN-DONAU-KANAL after about 2 kilometers at a point where the bike path and the adjacent road are at the same height level. Turning left there, we then have to ride a little further north on the road until the bike path to SCHWAND branches off slightly to the right at a curve.
