Marienthal, located 4 km southeast of Haguenau, is the most important Marian pilgrimage site in Alsace. Marienthal Monastery dates back to the knight Albert of Haguenau, who founded a hermitage around 1240. Around 1250, the hermitage became a monastery inhabited by monks of the Wilhelmiten order. Margrave Bernhard of Baden donated a Madonna to the monastery in 1420, which became one of the most important Marian pilgrimage destinations in Alsace. Construction of a new church began in 1460. Jesuits served in Marienthal from 1617, with pilgrimage care ending with the ban of the Jesuit order in France in 1765. In 1863, the late Gothic building was replaced by the present-day church. The facility is still used as a pilgrimage church and is managed by Benedictine nuns.
