L'Oustaou du Luberon
Want to discover the legendary villages of the southern Luberon? Through this route, we offer you a deep immersion in the vineyard landscapes of the Côtes du Luberon under the wooded and reassuring curve of the Mourre Nègre which peaks at 1125 m.
The route starts from our Village de Gites L’Oustaou du Luberon, located on the heights of the village of Villelaure, to join the route proposed by Vélo Loisir Provence. A beautiful 34 km loop passing through Ansouis, Sannes, Cucuron, Lourmarin, and Cadenet.
The first stage of your route is the village of Ansouis (beautiful road through the countryside) with a nice little climb towards the castle. Along the way, you cross fields of pumpkins or squash, vineyards, and olive groves. The vine reigns supreme in the area. You are in the Luberon park: created in 1977 and gathering about sixty municipalities to protect the natural environment and promote harmonious development of the territory, defend and develop the region.
In Ansouis:
- The small market is on Sunday morning.
- In the distance you can see the Luberon mountain, the Mourre Nègre which peaks at 1125 m altitude.
- The castle of Ansouis belonged to the Sabran family. Recently sold to a couple from Aix, it is open for visits from 2:30 pm to 6 pm. It was in the church that the wedding scene of Manon (from the springs) was filmed, but the exterior of the church is that of Vaugines (more open for a group photo).
- You can visit the santon artisan, located in the center of the village, near the bistro.
- You can stop by the pastry shop, in the square opposite the town hall, which offers good cakes and lovely ice creams.
- Below the village, on rue du vieux moulin, is the Extraordinary Museum. You will enter a succession of medieval vaults that form a true setting for many wonders: fish, shells, corals, happily combined with witnesses of our prehistoric times: fossils from the Luberon.

Next, head towards Sannes, passing in front of Lac de La Bonde before continuing to the village of Cucuron. Feel free to stroll through the village center, known for its olive oil.
This well-preserved village shows its 13th-century ramparts and gates. Scenes from the films The Horseman on the Roof and A Good Year were filmed in Cucuron. Pass by the pond, now a source of freshness in hot season. Originally, it was a pond fed by Luberon springs whose water powered flour mills. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was arranged as a basin on the current site.
Now head to Vaugines, our favorite in the southern Luberon, with the chapel of Manon des Sources: the last scene of Papé on the bench, you know it?
Then the village of Lourmarin which developed around the old castle. At the Renaissance, the new castle, then later the temple, was established outside the initial enclosure. The ensemble is remarkable for its strategic position at the mouth of the Lourmarin valley. Stop at the Moulin, now Edouard Loubet’s restaurant. Inside is a magnificent press.
Continue on foot to the 14th-16th century castle which you can visit (around €7). Also visit the Château cellar to taste our Luberon wines.
If you look up you will see the Clock Tower, also called the “belfry.” It was built in the 17th century on remains of a feudal castle. It is actually a bell-gable housing the public clock, holding a bell cast in Carpentras, 57 cm high and 70 cm in diameter. The building was classified as a historic monument in 1942 (The belfry is a typical construction of our villages).
Several “gourmet” shops also welcome you in Lourmarin, with all the flavors of the Luberon…. and magnificent ready-to-wear shops or exceptional artisans/creators!
Restaurants also offer delicious meals, such as “l’antiquaire” or “la récréation”… Finally, don’t forget the market on Friday morning.
Finally, return to the Village de Gîtes via Cadenet with its must-sees: the Basketry Museum, the statue of the Tambour d'Arcole, the Saint Etienne church, the castle site, the troglodyte dwellings.. And of course its panorama over the Durance valley and its fountains and washhouses.
