You should linger in the pottery towns of Soufflenheim and Betschdorf. Pottery in the forest areas of today's northern Alsace has been known since the Bronze Age according to archaeological finds. Even then, the raw material was obtained from clay layers several meters thick beneath the sandy soil.
The traditional color of Soufflenheim ceramics was rust brown, the color of the clay, with white daisy decoration (now also blue, green, beige, and red). The dominant colors of Betschdorf pottery are gray and cobalt blue.

Tips and suggestions
Our route in Betschdorf passes a stork breeding station (Abri à cigogne) which can be visited up close.Roadbook
From the Rue de la Montée parking lot, you ride down the Grand Rue past various pottery studios and places to eat. To the left, it goes into Rue du Marché which soon becomes Rue du Betschdorf. Through a forest area, we pass the Maison Forestière Erzlach. Later, at a right turn of the D 344, we continue straight onto a paved Route Forestière (marked as a bike path). At Carrefour Parade, we turn right and quickly reach Betschdorf after the Maison Forestière Heuscheu.
After visiting various half-timbered houses, we continue to the Abri à cigogne and then back to the IC 54 bike path Betschdorf-Soultz. This leads us past Rittershoffen on the D 243 to Hatten, where we turn right at the town entrance and later ride along a former railway line to Niederroedern. Via Schaffhouse, we reach Seltz.
After passing through the town center, we cycle on a bike path along the D28 and turn right shortly before the Auberge du Rhin (a place to stop). Here, you could take a ferry across to Germany.
We follow the "Pamina Radweg Rheinauen" upstream along the Rhine. Since it was not signposted on our section in April 2019, GPS is advisable. We pass Neuheausel and Fort-Louis without seeing anything of these places.
At the next left bend of the Rhine, we turn right (in the direction of travel) onto a small, unmarked road and then ride along a stretch of the Moder through Stattmatten. Behind Sessenheim, we cross the motorway on the D 737 and soon return to Soufflenheim.
