L’Horta de València, which was founded along with the foundation of Valentia in the 2nd century BC, is currently a product of the centuries-old work of Valencian society, which has evolved alongside its closest ecosystems, including the city of València.
L’Horta de València was born with the city; they cannot be understood without each other.
The physical environment of this land and the Mediterranean rainfall regime are the two natural factors that forced our ancestors, Romans and especially Arabs, to domesticate the water from the nearby Túria river and the springs that nourish this area. The result is a system of irrigation channels, mills, wells, and a whole series of guidelines for organization and peaceful coexistence for its fair distribution, which still survives today and has its most brilliant representation in the Tribunal de las Aguas, an institution created around the 10th century and declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
We invite you to explore l’Horta de València at the leisurely pace of the bicycle. Through cyclopeatonal routes, we can discover one of the few remaining historical irrigated landscapes in the Mediterranean basin.
