Public transport
Public-transport-friendly
Interesting for such a route is arrival/departure by public transport. Since the quality of rental bikes is said to be poor, I decided to take my own bike. During research it turned out that the ticket including bike transport from Austria to Flensburg/D cannot be booked online, but requires booking at the ticket counter in Germany. When making this booking, almost 2 months in advance, it turned out that bike transport is not possible within a whole week on the return trip with Deutsche Bahn. So I didn't book and kept thinking. For the return from Copenhagen, I checked Flixbus: bike transport from Copenhagen via Berlin to Prague is easily possible and also bookable online with an 8 euro surcharge (as of 2021). So only the outbound trip was booked with Deutsche Bahn. The Czech railways have enough bike spaces on international trains continuing from Prague to Linz, and bikes can be booked online. However, it is recommended to bring a strap to secure the bike.
On the day of departure it turned out that due to rail replacement service in Austria, bike transport was not possible (despite a valid bike ticket). The ÖBB responsible for this replacement service declared itself not responsible because the ticket was booked with Deutsche Bahn. It was about driving the first part of the journey by own car including the bike and to get the car trip reimbursed. The railway contacted for this did not respond until departure. The reimbursement for the first part of the journey by car (2 x 45 km) is still pending.
A small story to illustrate Deutsche Bahn's behavior: After reaching the ICE that departs 2 hours earlier by car arrival, it was no problem to use the ICE departing 2 hours earlier in Austria despite train binding. After Passau it was the end: 4 instead of 3 on the generously sized bicycle area in the Silberpfeil - impossible, just like sitting in the train 2 hours earlier. The justification to absolutely catch the connection in Nuremberg for the last connection to Hamburg was irrelevant. The correct train then stood 40 minutes before Nuremberg on the way there due to a broken freight train - just as feared. "Fortunately" the transfer train Munich - Hamburg was then also delayed...
Regarding buses and trains in Denmark: everything is very expensive and bike transport is enormously complicated. The interregional bus does not take bicycles, although the buses look identical to the regional Sydtrafik line. For a bicycle, 2 zones are charged, that is 24 DKK.
For the Danish train, a Danish phone number must be called in advance for bike transport, then payment for bike and reservation is made while the passenger reservation is free.
