The Sembach Air Base (abbreviated: Sembach AB), located 10 km northeast of Kaiserslautern, is a former military airfield of the United States Air Forces and housed the headquarters of the 17th Air Force during the Cold War. In 1995, the air base was decommissioned and converted into a commercial park. Today, the tower and many other buildings, especially the many shelters, are well preserved. The shelters are mostly used by companies. The runway has been dismantled except for a 300 m long section. The bike route “Sembach Air Base” leads from Winnweiler via Lohnsweiler and Wartenberg-Rohrbach to Sembach, where you ride through the area of the former air base. The return route goes back on the Alsenz bike path to Winnweiler.

Directions
The start point of the circular route is the train station in Winnweiler. From there, you ride over Schlossstraße to the marketplace and via Jakobstraße out of Winnweiler towards Lohnfeld. Between the two places, you can ride on a bike path to the right beside the country road. From Lohnsfeld, you go gently uphill on the K 1 towards Potzbach and after 1 km turn left towards Schmitterhof. In the center of Schmitterhof, turn left. An asphalt farm road leads to the L 40, which you cross to then ride south on the bike path along the country road. On this bike-pedestrian path, you reach the municipality of Sembach via Wartenberg-Rohrbach. At the entrance to Sembach, turn towards the town center. The main road leads you up to the current commercial park. At the roundabout, go straight ahead over Flugplatzstraße to the former military airport of Sembach. At the end of Flugplatzstraße, turn right and ride to the former tower. There, a small path leads left across the former runway. After 400 m, you meet an asphalted path where you turn left. Ride towards the wind turbine until just before the large photovoltaic system, turn right here and after about 300 m turn left. The path passes a game enclosure going downhill into the Alsenz valley to Untere Eselsmühle. Here, turn left onto the Alsenz bike path running parallel to the B 48 towards Münchweiler. Past the Rural Services Center (DLR) and the Hofgut Neumühle (educational and experimental institution of the Palatinate district association), continue to Münchweiler. About 300 m after the entrance to the town, turn right and then immediately left towards the community center and train stop. After about 1 km, the signed Alsenz bike path passes the former Langmeil station and then leads to the K 10, on which you cycle over the Sattelhof to Alsenbrück. Shortly after the end of Alsenbrück, turn right and after crossing the railway tracks, turn left onto a paved field path towards Winnweiler. After another 1.5 km, you arrive at the site of the Bischoff private brewery in Winnweiler. Here, turn left over the bridge to the starting point of the tour.
