The challenging Seenlandrunde takes us from Sulzberg into the Illertal valley, continues over the Buchenberg plateau down to the Niedersonthofener See and back along the northern shore of the Rottachsee.

From the church square in Sulzberg, we turn right onto Bahnhofstraße and then left onto Duracher Straße, which leads us via Seebach, Hofstetten and Sparenberg to the Sulzberger See. After a stretch along the A980, we follow the course of the Iller before crossing it at Hegge. We first follow Plabennecstraße and then take the bike path to Rohr. From the beautiful valley floor, we ascend steeply along the forest edge to the Waldhäusle, which invites you to stop with its scenic beer garden. Afterwards, we turn right to the rolling Wirlinger Forest, which demands good riding skills with its coarse gravel paths. Behind a lighter hollow, we reach the elevation of Buchenberg, with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains and the Kempten plateau. We pass through the town towards Eschach and continue onto the high plateau around Hahnemoos, which offers views of the mountain peaks in the southwest. Our route then leads us on a slight downhill stretch to Steckenried. From Schwarzerd, we follow the former railway track through the western outlier of the Wirlinger Forest. After going under the B12, we reach Hellengerst, which rewards us with its dreamlike panorama for our efforts so far. Behind the town, we ride on a narrow road to Ettensberg. From here follows a long descent lined by a light wood with wonderful views, which takes us down many bends to Niedersonthofen. We pass Niedersonthofener See on the northern shore and curve widely to Oberdorf. At Martinszell we cross the Iller and ascend gently via Widdum to Ottacker, which remains memorable for its pretty church. After a long climb, our path follows Raichen along the Rottachsee. We pass the Stone Cross before descending along the hill ridge back to Sulzberg and arrive at the Holy Trinity Church.

The long circuit can be shortened via Memhölz or divided into two separate rounds.

    Author’s recommendation

Due to the long distance and numerous steep climbs, it may be advisable to divide the route into two day stages.
