Schwarzatal cycle route (version 2.3)
The Schwarzatal cycle route connects the alpine landscape at the foot of the Rax with the Steinfeld plain around Bad Erlach and is an important leisure offer both for the residents of the region and cycling enthusiasts. Along the Schwarza, this route leads from the roots of industrialization to the historical landscape of the Semmering Railway World Heritage and the summer resort locations.
Along the route there are numerous places to stop for a break and if the weather or condition doesn't cooperate, the nearest train station is not far away.

The start of the Schwarzatal cycle route is at the municipal office in Lanzenkirchen (or at the junction with Eurovelo 9). This can be easily reached by train from Wiener Neustadt (and then by bike) or you can cycle the Eurovelo 9 from Wiener Neustadt to Lanzenkirchen.
From the municipal office you head a bit northwest over the railway and then flat and comfortably parallel to the railway line heading west. Even now, an impressive view opens up to Schneeberg and Rax – the cycling tour will end at the foot of these two mountains.
The freight path merges into Haderswörth main street and you cross via roundabout the L142 toward Föhrenau. At the fire station in Föhrenau you turn right into Wiener Straße and immediately left into Kurze Gasse. This then leads into a well-paved field path, which at the beginning of Schwarzau am Steinfeld merges again into the main street. This street is left again after a few hundred meters and you ride past the football field in a traffic-calmed area.
Then the route crosses the B54. Caution is required here as the federal road is quite busy. Once the B54 is overcome, you cross the southern motorway – the bridge is one of three spots along the entire route where the gradient increases somewhat. The downhill section can only be enjoyed shortly because the path soon takes a sharp turn left onto an asphalted cycle and pedestrian path. This leads along the southern motorway to Breitenau.
In Breitenau you ride about 200 m on the main street (L140) and then turn left into Fasangasse. Past two industrial companies (which can be busier during weekday shift changes but it’s not a big deal) you continue on an asphalted cycle and pedestrian path parallel to and then under the motorway to Natschbach-Loipersbach.
At the town entrance you cross the Schwarza and then cycle parallel to the river toward Neunkirchen. The route leads through the city center of the district capital over the main square, where you can take a break in one of the many cafés. A public toilet and a freely accessible drinking fountain are also available.
Note: the routing through Neunkirchen differs depending on the riding direction. Please pay attention to the signage.
From the main square you continue through Neunkirchen city park (tip: if it’s too hot, the outdoor pool is only 200 m away) over the Petersberg to Ternitz. Here is the second uphill section – so it pays off to have recharged in Neunkirchen beforehand 8-). The Petersberg (don’t worry, it’s only a small hill and not a mountain) also invites you to linger. There are quite a few shady spots.
Within the municipality of Ternitz the route runs along the Schwarzadamm. So you always have the Schwarza in sight or at least within hearing distance.
After crossing in Dunkelstein (right after the Petersberg) and in Blindendorf (near the Jet gas station) *** [TRINKBRUNNEN] *** you must change sides on a heavily trafficked bridge in Wimpassing – please be especially careful here. Two more crossings follow (Pottschach, Putzmannsdorf) *** [TRINKBRUNNEN] *** until you reach Buchbach and then Enzenreith. There (KG Siedlau) you leave the Schwarzadamm and proceed on low-traffic lanes until the company WIEDNER GmbH, where you follow the road for about 100 m, and then re-enter a traffic-calmed area. After that – from the Gloggnitz sewage treatment plant – you continue on a comfortable cycle and pedestrian path to Gloggnitz station.
At Gloggnitz station, turn right against the riding direction and go under the Südbahn at the last somewhat steeper climb. The path continues along Jungbergstraße and Silbersbergstraße to Schlöglmühl. From here the route follows Wiener Straße to Payerbach. Although this street is not heavily trafficked, it is a “normal” rural road, so cyclists should ride in a disciplined single file.
In Payerbach a cycle and pedestrian path (Wasserleitungsweg) leads to Bahnhofstraße where you turn left and cross at the traffic light intersection. You ride over a bridge above the Schwarza and then immediately turn right.
Past the outdoor pool and the mini-golf course it goes along the Schwarza to Reichenau, where you cross the road about 30 meters against the riding direction. From here simply follow the road to Reichenau Castle. You have reached the destination.
OPTION: Höllentalbahn shed
Starting from Reichenau Castle, you can continue on a very nice cycle path to the shed of the Höllentalbahn: At the castle, turn left once and then immediately right after the castle, heading parallel to the Höllentalbahn (which you will cross a few times) and to the Schwarza towards this special destination.
