Roadbook
The route starts on the Saar riverbank of the city of Saarlouis, which owes its name to the French Sun King Louis XIV and was expanded by his famous architect Vauban as a hexagonal fortress. From the green areas of the city park and from Vauban Island, you can get an impression of the size and shape of the former fortifications. From Saarwellingen, the route gently rises. The wildlife enclosure of the recreational area Wolfsrath with its adventure playground and its fallow and red deer enclosures is a quiet place to rest after leaving behind the bustle of the Saar valley. Along the route, scenic sections alternate with urban sections. In the idyllic brewery located at the edge of the forest in the Großwald manor, the tasty Großwald beer has been brewed for 150 years. From the manor, there is a wide view over the heights of the Köllertal. The path leads up a steep ascent to the Ill upland, where from many viewpoints the beautiful cultural landscape can be enjoyed. In the old mining village of Hüttigweiler, a parish church in neo-Romanesque style and the rose garden, where over 2500 roses of fifty varieties can be admired, are worth seeing. In Marpingen, the Saar-Nahe Upland Cycle Path crosses, leading northwards directly to Bostalsee via the former Roman road. Eastward the cycle path leads down into the Blies valley to St. Wendel. Particularly worth seeing is the Wendalinus Basilica, built in the late Gothic style in the mid-14th century. In Wendelinus Park, there are golf courses, skate parks, a fitness trail, and the Robinson Wellfit. St. Wendel has made an international name for itself through high-caliber cycling and motorsport events. The last section of the route is a scenic highlight. In Dörrenbach, the route finally meets the Saarland cycle path. An extension of the route is recommended northwards through the idyllic Oster valley with its largely natural stream course today.
