Just after the railway bridge, there is some excellent open access chalk downland, Carlton Down. It can be seen from the side of the road, beyond the main railway line. Rights of way access can be found along the roadside- one just before the railway bridge, the other on the road at the chicane.
At Old Idsworth to your left you will see St Huberts, also known as 'The Little Church in a Field'. This church contains some of the oldest wall paintings in southern England, dated c.1330, and the only known one of the St Hubert. It is also the site of a deserted medieval village.
