The summer residence of the dukes, a forest that is at the same time a landscape park but also ancient oaks, tall beeches and enchanted carp ponds are the main attractions of the charming Waldlust route. A very special highlight is the Goldbergsee on the edge of Coburg.
The forest west of Coburg is a very special woodland. Once designed as a ducal hunting ground and partly even as a landscape park in the English style, it offers unexpected surprises. These make the route, which starts in Coburg, a varied discovery journey. Coburg with its lively city centre with its monuments, townhouses, shops and cafes is always worth a leisurely stroll. Outside the town, the trees suddenly give way to romantic building ruins and ancient oaks and beeches, where carp ponds invite you to take a break. Three dukes of Coburg indulged here in shaping nature according to human needs. Their summer residence Callenberg Castle, which we already reach a few kilometres behind Coburg, is still owned by the noble house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, which is related through skilled marriage politics to almost all European royal families. Unless dignitaries from England, Sweden or Bulgaria are visiting, the interiors can be visited. Below the castle is the former ducal farm Callenberg, where today the Coburg Waldorf School and a gardener’s farm with strictly organic production have found their home. For the ensemble with the U-yard, the red brick administration buildings and the former barns and coach houses converted into workshops, you should plan a few minutes’ break. The further we advance on the subsequent drive to Gauerstadt, the more the forest takes on the usual appearance of a commercial forest. On the return journey, we leave the steep Callenberg castle hill on the right to cool off at the bathing shore of the Goldbergsee and enjoy swimming, a boat trip or feeding the ducks.
Author’s recommendation
Coburg
The residence town of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha stands for great European history – but also for joie de vivre. Guarded by one of the largest castle complexes in Germany, top-class sights line up like pearls on a string. For the town with its lively marketplace, water features, attractive street cafes and shops, a full day should be planned. Regular guided tours start from the tourist info in Herrngasse (side street of the marketplace).
Tip: Schedule this route on a Saturday, because then it is weekly and farmers’ market – the selection of regional cheese and sausage specialties for a picnic is huge.
Callenberg Castle
The landmark towering on a hill is the former summer residence of the dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and still owned by the noble family today. The historic living rooms with a remarkable clock collection and paintings by Lukas Cranach can be visited. In the northwest wing, the German Shooting Museum invites you to appreciate the history of shooting sports.
Summer opening hours:
Gauerstadt
A charming village with the region’s oldest inn, first mentioned in 1523. The country inn is even recommended by the ADFC as particularly bicycle-friendly.
Goldbergsee
The Goldbergsee is flood protection at its most beautiful. Since its flooding in 2010, one can watch how ever new water birds, plants and amphibians conquer the artificial lake as a habitat. The northern, shallow part is a nature reserve – information boards help discover the often rare species. The southern banks form a popular natural swimming pool in summer. Boats can also be rented here.
On the eponymous Goldberg hill hidden in the forest is the romantic writing workshop of the once famous, today almost forgotten poet Friedrich Rückert.
