River hopping combined with nature and cultural experiences awaits you on this River Quartet route.
Along the Nims cycle path to Minden, sculptures made of bright red Eifel sandstone line the way, uniquely combining culture and nature. On the former railway track, we cycle comfortably through the Bitburger Gutland with its historic villages, old architectural culture, and sun-drenched orchards.
In Irrel, we follow the Prüm, then the Kyll, the second-longest river of the Eifel, to Minden on the Sauer.
On the German side, the Sauer accompanies us on our way and leads through a wetland between Metzdorf and Wintersdorf where fauna and flora reveal their full splendor.
At the Luxembourg border crossing Wasserbillig, we reach the Moselle cycle path that leads us to the destination, the oldest Roman city Trier.
At the Moselle, we encounter natural contrasts between vineyard landscapes and lovely river valleys, as well as an abundance of historic cultural monuments.

Roadbook
Our route begins in the beer town of Bitburg at the tourist information. From the starting point, turn left past the post office building into Görenweg and follow the cycling signs for the Nims cycle path - direction Stahl/Birtlingen. The cycle path runs through the district of Stahl past the Backesmühle to Birtlingen. Then it continues along the Nims cycle path through the picturesque villages of Messerich, Wolsfeld, Alsdorf, Niederweis to Irrel. The cycle path accompanies the river on long and mostly paved paths, with little incline, over about 20 km.
In Irrel, we stay a short distance on the Prüm cycle path towards Minden and here change to the Sauer cycle path. The cycle path follows the Luxembourg-German border river Sauer on its last section to the confluence with the Moselle in Wasserbillig. Consistently flat route on separate, paved paths, the highlights are the many bridges, a tunnel, and the cycle path between Metzdorf and Wintersdorf on a 200-meter-long rack construction to protect the local flora and fauna; also suitable for leisure cyclists.
In Wasserbillig, at the Luxembourg border crossing, we stay on the German side towards the Moselle cycle path to Trier, the oldest city in Germany.
Arriving in Trier at the Messepark, we follow the cycle path straight along the Moselle - direction "Trier West" to the Roman bridge. We cross the Roman bridge and turn left back onto the cycle path towards Trier-Zurlauben. The Moselle is now on our left side. In Trier-Zurlauben, we turn right upwards towards the Trier city center; the cycle path leads through the city park past the Porta Nigra to the destination, the main train station.
