On this themed route through cultural East Frisia, you will discover East Frisian architecture and picturesque coastal towns!
Red dominates!
All East Frisian towns and villages share a common color: the deep brick red of their buildings. Whether residential houses, farms, schools, town halls, churches, museums, train stations, or shops, even observation towers, garages, and garden houses – the color red dominates everywhere. The production and use of fired earth as a building material have been documented in East Frisia since the 12th century. You can now get your own impression of how diverse and sophisticated the artistic design of facades and portals with THE East Frisian building material has developed on the "Red Route" of up to 50 km through the Norder and Brookmerland. Three sections, which can be combined according to taste, take you to picturesque Gulf farms, fortified houses of worship, former chieftain castles, and romantic palatial complexes.

Roadbook
FROM NORDEN TO LÜTETSBURG
From the starting point, the East Frisian Tea Museum, head towards Ludgeri Church. Following Osterstraße, leave the town towards the B72. Keep right and at the roundabout continue towards Hage. We pass through Lütetsburg with its Gulf farms. On the right appears the castle park (with gastronomy), shortly after the Lütetsburg Castle.
FROM LÜTETSBURG TO HAGE AND BERUM
Continue along the main road towards Hage, soon on the right side you will discover St. Ansgari in Hage. Still on the main road, after the roundabout and the highest windmill in Germany, you will find Berum Castle.
FROM BERUM TO UPGANT-SCHOTT AND MARIENHAFE
Back towards Hage. Before St. Ansgari, turn left onto Halbemonder Str. Follow this to Halbemond, cross Nadörster Str., and continue straight towards Leezdorf (Leezweg). At the end, turn left (Moortunweg), then after a short while right again (Am Sandkasten). Drive through to the end, turn right into Kirchstraße and continue towards Marienhafe. Shortly before the town sign, turn left into Kenotom-Brook-Straße, which becomes Upganter Str. Attentive eyes will spot Ulferts Börg on the left side.
BACK TO NORDEN (without Siegelsum/Engerhafe extension)
Cross the B72 and turn right into Rosenstraße. Admire the mighty Marienkirche at the market. After circumnavigating, follow Kronstraße, which becomes Alten Postweg, to Osteel, passing Warnfriedkirche on the right. We meet the B72 again and follow the bike path to Norden. At the gas station, turn right into II. Moorrieger Weg and immediately left into the forest (in bad weather continue along the B72 towards Norden). The forest path leads left back to the B72 at the end, which we cross at the traffic light. Along Bahnhofsstraße, go over the Norder Tief (worth seeing: old customs house, Frisia and dike mills) and straight on to the moat, which leads back to the starting point.
