Railway track cycle paths Eifel: Sauer Cycle Route
In the cross-border low mountain range region of the Eifel, several cycle paths run completely or partially along former railway lines.
Sauer Cycle Route: Off to Luxembourg! ROUTE: 61.2 km, 441 m ascent, easy This route meanders along the German-Luxembourg border river Sauer. After starting in Wasserbillig, where the Sauer flows into the Moselle, cycle paths run on both banks for the first section, connected by several bridges. The path is generally quite flat, easily rideable thanks to paved cycle paths, and partly follows a former railway line. Vineyards and picturesque towns in Luxembourg shape the route as much as the 336-meter-long illuminated Ralinger Tunnel and many bridges. Between Metzdorf and Wintersdorf, after about 10 kilometers, the path is elevated on stilts for 200 meters to protect a wetland. The last 35 kilometers from the scenic Echternach to Ettelbrück are entirely in Luxembourg, where the path is signposted as "Piste-Cyclable-de-la-Basse-Sûr." In Minden, there is a connection to the Prümtal Cycle Path.
