Rail trail cycle paths Eifel: Vennbahn cycle path
In the cross-border low mountain range region Eifel, several cycle paths run completely or partially along former railway lines.
Vennbahn Cycle Path: 3-Country Route ROUTE: 128.2 km, 968 m ascent, easy Those who only want to do a day trip might take just the first two stages of about 50 kilometers starting from the imperial city Aachen, which lead through tranquil forest and meadow landscapes via the Belgian Raeren back into German territory to the small Eifel town of Monschau with its half-timbered houses and narrow streets. But it is worthwhile to cycle the entire route along the Vennbahn track, which was laid at the end of the 19th century as a connection between coal mining areas in the north and steelworks in the south and was shut down in 2002, and to have a special border experience. The route repeatedly changes from Germany to Belgium and back, finally leading to Luxembourg. So keep your eyes open to perceive the diversity of the regions between Eifel hills, fascinating moor landscapes in the High Fens, or the idyllic Our valley.
