Rail Trail Cycle Paths Eifel: Maare-Mosel Cycle Path
In the cross-border low mountain range region of the Eifel, several cycle paths run completely or partially along former railway tracks.
Maare-Mosel Cycle Path: Route of Viaducts and Tunnels ROUTE: 58.5 km, 381 m ascent, easy Just after the Plein Viaduct, there is about ten kilometers downhill, at times fast. Just roll, feel the wind in your face, pass through three tunnels – the longest 585 meters – oh, beautiful! Provided you ride this path that runs along a railway line opened at the end of the 19th century and closed in the early 1980s, from north to south, from the Eifel town of Daun to Bernkastel-Kues on the Mosel. Immediately near Daun, it crosses the most impressive of several viaducts on the route, with a wide view over the surroundings. Shortly afterwards, there is another cycle tunnel called “Großes Schlitzohr”, 560 meters long. By the way, the final section is not the only part that leads to water. On the first part through the volcanic Eifel, short detours to some Eifel maars are possible. The almost continuously asphalted cycle path skirts small villages as well as extensive nature reserves.
